What I Learned from Dave Ramsey at Smart Conference 2015

I have to admit, Dave Ramsey is one influential man!  If he hasn’t directly influenced you, it’s probably someone you know, right?  He’s influential not only in finances but in life.  This man is a natural born go-getter.  He speaks our language.  He knows what will inspire and equip us!

Problem: Our minds can hold us back from the very things we want in life.  I know for me that often times the huge wall between where I want to be and where I am falls directly between my ears–my mind.  Dave Ramsey addresses this problem in the last and final inspirational message at the Smart Conference 2015 titled “The Power of Intentionality… You Become What You Think About.”

Who is he?  “Dave Ramsey is America’s trusted voice on money and business. He’s authored five New York Times best-selling books Financial Peace, More Than Enough, The Total Money Makeover, EntreLeadership, and Smart Money Smart Kids.  The Dave Ramsey Show is heard by more than 8.5 million listeners each week on more than 550 radio stations.  More than 2 million families have attended Financial Peace University (FPU) classes at their workplace, church, or community group.”

What did I learn?  I learned the following things:

  • “What you can conceive and believe you can achieve.
  • Goals must be specific.
  • Goals must be measurable.
  • Goals must have a time limit.
  • Goals must be yours.
  • Goals must be in writing.”

The last point was and is my take-away favorite!

Our goals must be in writing! -says Dave Ramsey

Why did this message stick?  This message stuck because Dave closed his message by opening his personal black binder from 1992 (I believe was the date).  Inside he opened it up and there it was.  His FAILURES.  He had written down every goal that he wanted to pursue.  And boy were they some big goals.

Yet, as he went through the list, he didn’t hit all of his goals.  So according to the paper, he failed.  Yet, he kept going and he didn’t give up. And he ended up bursting passed those goals and into greater goals for his life!  Hence…all of great accomplishments listed above.  He has helped millions of people take control of their money.  I loved seeing this black binder.  He just simply wrote his goals down.

Why does this message mean something to me? This message means something to me because it’s real, tangible results.  He doesn’t just talk the talk but walks the walk.  He is where he is today because he worked hard.  It wasn’t lucky.  It wasn’t by mere chance.  It was intentional living!  Such the title of our site!  We are Living Intentionally Focused Everyday!  We are living LIFE!

Once upon a time Robert and I had a “Dream Board” which was our “prayer board.”  On one side was the prayers and on the other side were the answered prayers.  That year we saw some powerful prayers being answered.  One, for instance, was when we were handed the keys to our FREE black 8 seater Toyota Sequoia.  What a day that was!

…and that was written down.

What do you need to write down? Take out a post-it note, back of an envelope, or grocery receipt, and write down three specific things you would like to see happen this year in the following areas:

  1. finances
  2. relationships
  3. personal fitness

There you have it!  The power of intentionality!  What a fantastic conference that was!  Thanks for joining me virtually as we re-learned what it is to be Smart.  😉
