How do you like studying the Bible? Do you wake up every morning ready to spend time with the Lord? Ready to receive a piece of fresh yummy bread from the Bible? If not, I think I know what the problem is. You are not equipped to fall in love with the Lord through the Word of God (the Bible).
How much of the Bible are you “eating”? A Costco bite size or a full five course meal? One will leave you food deprived and starving, while the other will leave you totally satisfied.
In order to get your five course meal, you might need these 7 ingredients.
- Bible. Believe it or not, you need a Bible. I recommend getting a Bible that has study notes or life application to it. When you get stuck on a scripture that doesn’t make sense, you can rest on the theologians that will give you an explanation. These types of Bibles will also provide you with maps, charts, and all sorts of helpful tools.
- Dictionary. You may think this is strange but you never know when you’ll run across a biblical word that you do not know. Instead of guessing what the word means, look it up. I like to use the dictionary app on my i-phone.
- Lexicon. You don’t need to be a bible scholar to use a lexicon. A Greek and Hebrew lexicon will allow you to look up words that are used in the Bible to give the original Greek and Hebrew meaning. For me, this is where a lot of revelation (heavenly a-ha moments) happen when studying the Bible.
- Commentary. When I receive a new revelation or insight from scripture, I often check it with commentary to see how it compares to many other opinions. I use this as a confirmation as to what the Holy Spirit just taught me.
- Notebook. I love the technology world, but I still love my spiral notebooks. I often draw pictures, diagrams, charts, or anything else that helps me to meditate and process what He’s teaching me.
- YouVersion Bible App. I use this app on my i-phone to help me read the same scripture in a variety of translations.
- Jesus Calling. I highly recommend some type of daily devotional. Jesus Calling is a daily snippet of God speaking to you (via Sarah Young) with scripture to back it up. If you ever sit down to study the Bible but don’t know where to begin, you can begin here.
These are the 7 ingredients that will help equip you to have a delightful time every day with the Lord.
The Lord says to Seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart (Jer. 29:13), and to Seek first the kingdom and His righteousness and all things will be added to you [and your life] (Matthew 6:33). Jesus is our daily bread (Matthew 6:11) so be sure to feast on His word as you spend time with Him!
He’s better than any morning cinnamon roll!
